Yesterday we talked about ageism<\/a> and how to avoid it in our communities. Today, I’d like to talk about the ways in which we try to avoid age-related biases in homecare.<\/p>\n

\"Friendly<\/p>\n

Fostering Independence<\/h4>\n

I talk a lot about how we focus on fostering independence in numerous ways in homecare. The reason that we do this, fundamentally, is to respect the human dignity of each person under our care. We try to focus on what our clients can do by themselves and assisting them in that instead of focusing on what they cannot do. We also give them choices in their care. These choices can be as simple as what the client wants to wear, but it is about honoring their autonomy.<\/p>\n

Tailoring Care to Their Abilities<\/h4>\n

Speaking of, we are very specific to adjust the care to our client’s abilities and needs. They set the hours we are there, and they help the office decide what tasks they need the caregiver to perform. Again, we try to focus just as much on what a client can do as we do on what they cannot do. Age is not a factor on how we decide all these things. Two people of the same age can have very different abilities depending various factors.<\/p>\n
