Summer is approaching, and so I think it’s time to talk about some summer safety tips.<\/a> This is not medical advice, but some medications can mix negatively with the heat. There are also some medications that make your skin more prone to sun damage. Please talk to your physician or pharmacist about your medications to see if you need to take any extra precautions in summer.<\/p>\n

Hydrate<\/h4>\n

Hydration is so important in the summer. It’s important to drink water and also make sure you are mixing in electrolytes if you need it. There are great electrolyte powders as well as popsicles. I’ve talked about this before but I like to eat a lot of high water content fruits as well. You may want to switch up your water game with some coconut water or aloe water. I can’t stand the pulp in aloe water personally, but I love coconut water.<\/p>\n

Be an Early Bird or Night Owl<\/h4>\n

If you’re going to be active and can be flexible with the schedule, try to do activities either early or late to beat the sun. I am a night runner, and I know a lot of gardeners prefer to work on their gardens in the early morning. Doing any sort of outside exercise early or late can be crucial to summer safety, but of course you can’t schedule everything this way.<\/p>\n

Become a Sunscreen Expert<\/h4>\n

We’ve done a post about chemical and mineral sunscreens<\/a> before. Look into the two types, especially as mineral sunscreen has become more prominent lately. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are used to chemical sunscreen and you switch to a mineral sunscreen, that you will have to reapply more often than you may be used to doing. It may also wash off if you’re doing water activities. There are some great mineral and chemical options out there.<\/p>\n
