We’ve shared a lot about the kinds of volunteer opportunities older adults can take part in, and school-based volunteering is one of the most rewarding options — especially for grandparents and seniors with children in their lives. Volunteering offers real benefits: a sense of purpose, community connection, and consistent social interaction. And school environments happen to be particularly accessible, since most are ADA compliant, indoors, and offer plenty of tasks that don’t require standing or heavy lifting. Here are a few ways to get involved.

"grandparents

Volunteering at School Events

Schools regularly need volunteers for events like book fairs, fall festivals, and back-to-school nights. If your grandchildren are involved in extracurriculars, those often need help too — from concessions at sporting events to check-in tables at concerts and performances. Most of these events offer roles that don’t require heavy lifting or long periods of standing, like handling ticket sales, greeting attendees, or helping run a game booth from a seated position. It’s an easy way to be present in your grandchild’s world while contributing to the school community.

Helping With Reading Programs

Many elementary schools run programs that pair volunteers with students who need extra support with reading. This is one of the most impactful ways to help — especially in early grades, where reading fluency shapes so much of what comes next academically. Special education staff are often stretched thin, and early intervention makes a real difference in outcomes. A weekly hour spent reading with a student can genuinely change their trajectory, and it’s low-effort work that’s usually done sitting comfortably in a classroom or library corner.

Organizing Supply Drives

Organizing a supply drive doesn’t have to mean physically hauling collections around. Many schools already run their own — winter coat drives, back-to-school supply drives, holiday food collections — and welcome help coordinating rather than doing all the lifting. Spreading the word among friends, neighbors, or a church group multiplies the impact, and bringing a few friends into the effort makes the volunteering itself more social.

Sharing a Skill or Life Experience

Schools often welcome guest speakers from the community — retired teachers, veterans, artists, tradespeople, or anyone with an interesting career or life story to share. Career day, history units, and enrichment programs are common opportunities. If you have a professional background, a hobby, or lived experience that would interest students, reaching out to a local school to offer a short presentation can be surprisingly welcomed. Kids benefit from hearing from adults outside their own families, and speakers often find these visits genuinely rewarding.

Classroom and Library Support

Beyond special programs, many teachers appreciate ongoing classroom help — prepping materials, organizing supplies, laminating papers, or assisting during quiet work periods. School libraries also often need help shelving books, checking in returns, or running story times for younger students. These low-key, regular volunteer roles fit well around a flexible schedule and can be done largely seated.

Staying active in the community is one of the most meaningful ways to age well — and having the flexibility to get to and from volunteer commitments makes it easier to keep showing up. Our companion care team in Louisville provides transportation, companionship, and daily support that helps seniors stay engaged in the activities and community roles they care about.
