CareBuilders had the honor of joining more than 170 South Asian seniors at the Livingston Senior Community Center, hosted by Sanskriti of New Jersey for an important discussion on Fall Prevention and Home Safety.

Our Owner and Executive Director, Kiran Mulgund, led the session, sharing practical tips and insights on how small, thoughtful changes in the home can make a big difference in preventing falls and maintaining independence.

A Common but Preventable Risk

Falls are one of the leading causes of injury among older adults, but the good news is that most falls are preventable.  Kiran opened the session with a story about one of our clients who narrowly avoided a serious fall, illustrating how simple changes, like adding a nightlight or clearing walkways, can dramatically reduce risk.

Many seniors believe that limiting activity is the best way to avoid falls. In reality, avoiding movement can lead to muscle loss, reduced balance, and social isolation – factors that actually increase fall risk. Kiran emphasized that staying active, while making the home environment safer, is the best way to preserve strength, confidence, and independence.

Practical Steps for a Safer Home

During the presentation, attendees received the CareBuilders Home Safety Checklist, a room-by-room guide for identifying and addressing common hazards. The checklist includes easy-to-implement recommendations such as:

  • Installing grab bars in the bathroom
  • Using non-slip mats inside and outside the shower
  • Keeping frequently used items within easy reach
  • Improving lighting in hallways, bedrooms, and stairways
  • Securing or removing loose rugs and cords

These small, proactive measures empower seniors to remain safe and active in their own homes.
