Now that cold weather is in full swing in Louisville, I thought it would be helpful to review a few winter safety reminders. I shared some winter preparedness tips earlier, but now that winter conditions are here, these are a few things to keep in mind day to day.
Only Use Cleared Walkways
If your driveway or walkways aren’t clear, it’s safest to stay inside. A fall can increase the risk of future falls, which is why fall prevention is such an important concern for older adults. Avoiding icy or untreated surfaces is one of the simplest ways to reduce that risk, and it highlights why planning ahead for winter weather matters.
Take Care of Your Skin
Winter can be especially hard on skin. Cold air and indoor heating often lead to dryness and cracking, which can become uncomfortable or painful. Staying hydrated, using lotion regularly—especially on hands and feet—and continuing to wear sunscreen are all helpful habits. Sun damage can still occur in winter, even on cloudy days.
Reach Out to Your Community
Staying connected to your community can make winter much easier. Neighbors may be willing to help with shoveling walkways, and many areas offer grocery delivery or other services that reduce the need to go out in unsafe conditions. Knowing what resources are available ahead of time can provide peace of mind.
For additional, general guidance on preventing falls during icy conditions, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s fall prevention resources offer helpful, non-clinical information on reducing risk during winter months.
This article is for general informational purposes only and is not medical advice. CareBuilders at Home provides non-medical home care services focused on safety, daily living support, and independence.
Please stay safe and take care. With preparation and awareness, winter can be managed without too much stress. I’ll see you later this week for more Resolution January content.
