Here are some safety tips this Halloween for seniors and their families. These apply whether they are staying home passing out candy or trick-or-treating with their grandkids. There is fun to be had for everyone this Halloween!

Only Pass Out Wrapped Candy

One thing that I am concerned about when it comes to Halloween is sustainability, but unfortunately pre-wrapped candy is the best way to go when you are talking about allergies. If you live in a small area with very few kids, maybe home-baked goodies would be alright. There’s no real way to completely control cross contamination in your own kitchen.

Lights On at Night

If you are able and willing to go trick-or-treating with your grandkids, please consider adding wearable lights to your costume or carrying a flashlight with you. This will increase safety and visibility for you and the kids. Cars will be able to see you, and you will be able to see any uneven patches of ground.

Call in Reinforcements

I know how intense some of you get decorating your homes for Halloween and Christmas, and I’m not telling you that you need to stop that. What I am saying is don’t do it alone, make it a big family thing. Maybe even have a decorating party with a potluck, I don’t know, have fun with it. Please do not risk injuring yourself putting up a 12 foot tall skeleton.

Happy Halloween!
