Today is Disability Independence Day, in celebration of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. We have talked recently about disability and homecare. It is an important topic that we talk about often. We encounter disabled clients every single day, and it is important that we take care of them while preserving their dignity.

The Importance of the ADA

The ADA is a vital piece of disability rights in our country. It not only provided a framework for housing and employment protections, but it also meant that businesses and public buildings have to be accessible and ADA compliant. Before the ADA, there was no legal protections for disabled workers or assurance of public access.

The Sensitivities of New Disability

As people age, they often develop disabilities that they may not have had before. The most common of these are vision, hearing, and mobility changes. This can be quite the transition, and some of our cients may struggle accepting help. Treating them with compassion and like the adults they are will go a long way in reassuring them.
