August is Summer Sun Safety Awareness Month according to the American Cancer Society, and so today we are going to go over ways that you can protect your skin and have fun in the sun. Sun protection is important for everyone of all ages, but if you do have little ones in your lives, this is extra important. Kids often won’t take protective measures that the adults in their lives are ignoring.

Hats and Sunglasses

You need hats and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. The best hats are ones that cover your whole head, but if you have a lot of baseball caps, that’s better than nothing. The best sun protection is sun protection that you will wear consistently.

Don’t Buy Into the Anti-sunscreen Fear-Mongering

I have seen so much content this summer about not wearing sunscreen and how sunscreen is a hoax by “Big Pharma” and you can make your own. No, you can not make your own sunscreen because the reason we know the SPF content (the important part of sunscreen) of a given product is that they are rigorously tested in a lab. That’s how you know how long it will protect you.

Find the Right Sunscreen for You

There are tons of sunscreens on the market. You may have specific needs like sensitive skin, melanated skin so you have to avoid a white cast, or sensory issues. The internet can be a great resource here without you having to buy all the products yourself. When looking at reviews, pay attention to the reasoning of why someone liked or disliked the sunscreen over their conclusion. Sometimes, someone may like a product that you won’t, and you’ll only know that from how they describe the\ product.

Stay safe out there while you’re having fun in the sun!
