Every season I like to post about some ways that older adults can have affordable family fun. Affordability can be a huge concern for them, but they still want to hang out with their grandkids. And truly, while there are expensive family activities, you do not have to spend a lot of money to have fun with your family this summer.

Two older people sit on either side of a young woman in a blue sweater and they are all looking at a tablet and smiling.

Historic Homes and Museums

Louisville has a lot of historic homes and museums that are open to the public. The Speed Art Museum is one of my favorites, personally, and they are currently doing free general admission on Sundays thanks to a contribution by Brown-Foreman and they also do free themed guided tours. Museums can be a great option for families because they can give discounts to seniors or students and doing outings to museums can help foster alove of learning and interest in the arts or science or history. That’s a beautiful gift to give children.

The State Fair

I’ve talked about the state fair before as a great place for older adults because of how much of it is inside. It’s not the most affordable outing (there are discounted days so look into that) but if you or members of your family enter the fair, at least when I did it I got free tickets to visit the fair. The submission deadline has passed for this year, but I loved showing my little vegan banana bread at the fair. It was fun. In the future, you can even make a day out of making things for the fair, there are divisions for kids.

Louisville Free Public Library

The library has tons of free programming for all ages. On Friday July 25th, they are going to be hosting their free annual AnimeCon for teens that includes a teen art show. They also have tons of storytimes, programs about local wildlife, free cooking classes, and so much more! You’ll have to register for most of these in advance, so feel free to check out their website.
