One thing we talk about with regards to healthy eating for older adults is eating in-season fruits and vegetables. This is key not only to eating nutrient dense foods but also to staying within budget. Quinn Vandt wrote out a great calendar of in-season produce. We’re only going to talk about a few today.

Pumpkins
Squash is usually out of season by the time fall rolls around, but pumpkins are in-season! They’re great for fall cooking, and if you have any four-legged friends, they can be great for homemade dog treats as well. Pumpkin is good for doggie skin.
Apples
I have a confession: I am a fall apple fiend. I grew up in a region with a lot of apple orchards. Apples of various varieties are in-season in Kentucky in the fall months. They’re great in both sweet and savory fall dishes.
Carrots
Carrots are another thing that are great in fall stews and soups, as well as salads. They’re in season here in Kentucky starting this month as well.
Of course, this is not an exhaustive list. What are your favorite items of fall produce?
