Happy Care-o-ween! We’ve shared Halloween safety tips before, and with the holiday approaching, here are a few additional reminders to help families enjoy the festivities safely. You can also revisit our earlier post for more ideas, and read on for a few extra precautions.

Separate Common Allergens

Before handing out candy, take time to separate common allergens—such as peanuts or tree nuts—from allergen-friendly options. Keeping these treats in clearly labeled, separate containers can help reduce cross-contamination. We shared more ideas in our post on allergy-friendly Halloween treats. For general awareness, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration outlines the most common food allergens and why careful handling matters. Washing hands between handling different candy bowls is another simple way to improve safety.

Skip Full Face Masks

Costume masks that cover the entire face can limit visibility, which increases the risk of trips and falls. For safety reasons, it’s best to skip those styles. If masks are needed for health reasons, surgical or medical masks are less restrictive and allow for clearer vision. If you’re accompanying children, encouraging mask-free costumes can also make supervision easier.

Bundle Up

Halloween evenings can get cold quickly. Extra socks, hats, gloves, or layers can help everyone stay warm and comfortable. Being prepared for the weather is an important part of staying safe—especially for older adults who may be more sensitive to cold temperatures.

Wishing everyone a safe and happy Halloween!
