How can family caregivers go about seeking care for their loved ones? This month for National Family Caregiver Month, we have been covering one topic a week related to family caregivers. Whether a family member is setting up respite care or establishing more regular, ongoing care for their loved one, here are some things to look for when choosing a caregiver or caregiving agency. These questions can help guide families through the decision-making process.
How Flexible Is the Care?
One important factor to consider is how well care can adjust as needs change. For example, after the holidays, family caregivers may feel more exhausted and need additional support, while later in the spring fewer hours may be necessary. A loved one’s care needs may also become more complex over time. While some families are happy hiring an individual caregiver, one reason many people choose an agency is the long-term flexibility it offers—such as adding hours, adjusting schedules, or bringing in additional caregivers when needed. Is the Caregiver a Good Personality Match for the Client?
Once you have chosen an agency or begun interviewing caregivers, it is important to consider whether the caregiver and client are a good personality match. Caregiving is very personal and often emotional work, and things tend to go more smoothly when there is mutual comfort and trust. If a match does not feel right, that is not necessarily anyone’s fault. In some cases, clients may work with multiple caregivers, and it is equally important that those caregivers work well together.
How Sustainable Will This Be?
Beyond simply liking the caregivers, families should think about whether the care arrangement is stable and sustainable. While no one can predict the future, it helps to consider whether this plan can support your loved one over time and whether backup options are available if circumstances change unexpectedly. Organizations like the Family Caregiver Alliance also provide helpful guidance and resources for families navigating long-term caregiving decisions.
Thank you all so much, and happy Thanksgiving everyone!
