Summer is almost upon us, and that can mean some changes to the available local fruits and vegetables. We also simply want to eat different things than we do in the winter (although I could eat pineapple year round). Here are some summer tips. This is not medical advice, this is simply educational content for the purposes of entertainment.

High Water Content Fruits

Fruits like watermelon are great summer options for not only hydration but also vitamins and nutrients. Higher water content vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, and celery work the same way here. This is why I love salads in the summer. They are cooling but also very good for getting in key vitamins and minerals.

Cold Soups

Speaking of tomatoes, cold soups are also a great way to get in these same nutrients while not overheating your system. Cold soups can be refreshing and filling, especially in places that don’t deal with the most extreme heat. In a lot of those places that do deal with extreme heat, they do not eat or drink a lot of cold things like cold tea because of a concern over shocking one’s system.

Electrolyte Sources

Electrolytes are really important in the summer, especially if you’re going to be doing any outside activities. Electrolyte packets are convenient if you are on-the-go, and they’re relatively easy to find in grocery stores. Plus, there are all sorts of flavors that you can find. Now, because of the sodium content, you may want to check with your doctor or dietician if they have concerns about how often you should consume them. You may also want to look into other drinks with electrolytes in them, like coconut water.
