I’ve talked before about skin care for older adults. As we age, skin naturally changes and mature skin often has different needs than it did before. You may also notice that your skin reacts differently to products you’ve used for years. Below are a few general considerations that may help when adjusting a skin care routine over time.

Talk to a Dermatologist

If you notice significant skin changes or new reactions to products, it may be helpful to speak with a dermatologist. They can offer guidance on products that are often better suited for mature skin. New sensitivities or reactions can develop with age, and in some cases, a dermatologist may recommend further evaluation if allergies are suspected.

Look for Hydration

Hydration becomes increasingly important as skin tends to become drier over time. If you wear makeup, you may want to look for hydrating foundations or formulas designed for dry skin. Even without makeup, many people find they benefit from switching to a richer or more nourishing moisturizer than they used in the past.

Be Careful With Fragrance

This refers to fragrance in skin care products, not perfume. Fragrance can be a sensitizing ingredient for some people, and reactions may develop gradually over time. While fragrance doesn’t cause issues for everyone, it’s something to be mindful of. If irritation appears, discontinuing the product and consulting a dermatologist can be a good next step.

For general, non-clinical guidance on caring for aging skin, the American Academy of Dermatology’s overview of aging skin provides helpful background on common changes and routine care considerations.

And as always—stay hydrated, pay attention to how your skin responds, and remember to wear sunscreen.
