There are many types of care we provide at CareBuilders, and personal care plays an important role in helping older adults maintain dignity as they age. It’s a topic I haven’t spent much time on yet, so I wanted to take a moment to talk about it here. Personal care includes daily tasks related to hygiene and appearance—things like brushing hair and teeth, bathing, and getting dressed. Below are a few ways personal care support can make a meaningful difference for our clients.

Good Hygiene Is Part of Overall Health

Daily hygiene is closely connected to physical health. For example, difficulty brushing teeth can affect oral health, which in turn can contribute to other health concerns. Assistance with tasks like bathing or grooming can help reduce these risks and support overall well-being. When personal care becomes challenging, having reliable support can help ensure these routines are still maintained safely.

Preserving Human Dignity

Not being able to fully shower, use the toilet independently, or manage personal grooming can feel uncomfortable or embarrassing for many older adults. Preserving dignity is an essential part of emotional well-being. Even when full assistance isn’t needed, our caregivers are mindful of privacy and independence. For instance, if a client can use the toilet on their own but needs help getting on or off, a caregiver may wait nearby and step in only when needed.

Being in clean clothes with brushed hair and teeth can restore confidence—especially for someone who hasn’t been able to manage those tasks alone for a while. With support, many clients are also able to wear more of their wardrobe again, rather than limiting themselves to what feels easiest to put on independently. The same goes for hair care and footwear.

Many personal care routines are also supported by simple tools and adaptations. We’ve shared more about this in our post on assistive devices that support daily living, which highlights items that can make personal care tasks easier and safer at home.

For general, non-clinical information on the role of personal hygiene in daily health, MedlinePlus’ overview of personal hygiene provides helpful background on why these routines matter.
