Getting involved in your community is a great way for older adults to feel fulfilled and it betters their community. Now, of course my suggestions are going to be ability dependent as always. I never want to assume people’s abilities based on their age.

Organizing Events
A crucial amount of volunteer work is in organizing, especially things like clothing or food or supply drives. Angel tree and similar programs are a great example of this, it takes a tremendous amount of effort to organize those efforts. And a lot of the organizing work can be done over the phone, so it may be easier for older adults to contribute. Keep your ears open for events at places like your church, local community centers, or your local schools for potential events that may need your help. If you already have been volunteering somewhere and you have an idea for an event, feel free to pitch it to the people in charge of the volunteers.
Crafting or Making Donations
If you know how to knit or crochet, organizations like Knots of Love donate knit or crochet items to hospitals. Animal shelters may also take handmade items as well. You can always look into local organizations near you that take handmade items. Women’s shelters are a great place to ask as well. In terms of edible donations, Lasagna Love is an organization where volunteers make lasagnas for people in need. You can ask your local food bank if they need baked goods. You can get your friends together to make items once a month so you get to give back while having fun.
What are you doing to give back in the new year?
