This month, we are doing posts about nutrition for National Nutrition Month. Today we’re going to talk about how you can begin to prepare meals with the help of caregivers. We’re going to be specifically talking about bulk preparation today. We’ll discuss general cooking assistance later in the month.

Bulk Meal Preparation

Bulk meal preparation can be great for older adults, for many reasons. One is that cooking all at one time a week may help an older adult cook while not tiring them out as much as cooking every night. Another is that a lot of meals that can be made in bulk can be made cheaply and in a device like a slow cooker or air fryer. Caregivers can help with tasks like shopping, cutting vegetables, and basic levels of cooking. This could allow older adults to cook for themselves, which is an important part of independence.

Dietary Restrictions

As we age, sometimes we can develop dietary restrictions. Sometimes they’re allergies, and sometimes they are lifestyle changes as a result of conditions that we developed. These restrictions can make ordering food difficult, and so older adults may want to cook but they need some assistance. This way they can batch cook a lot of something, freeze it for the whole week, and accomodate their new restrictions.

Stay tuned later this week for more posts about nutrition!
