This past week it has been dangerously hot, and I thought we should go over extreme heat safety. Especially since people want to do summer activities, it is important that people know how to do that safely.

Keep Odd Hours

It is tempting to schedule outings for the middle of the day, but that is obviously when it is hottest outside. If it is at all possible, schedule outdoor activities for when the sun is down, and visit places like the library or museums when the sun is up. This will keep you out of the sun while still being active.

Eat Fruits and Vegetables

Produce has a high water content, which will help keep you hydrated. Soups and salads will serve the same purpose of hydrating you, since there is realistically only so much water that you can drink. And eating hydrating foods will give you vitamins and electrolytes.

Protect Your Body

You’ll have to be very careful to protect your skin and eyes from the afternoon sun. Also don’t forget your hat and sunglasses. Also make sure that you wear lotion, as the sun dries out your skin.

Stay safe, everyone. Summer can be a dangerous time, especially for older adults.
