Some people have personal care rituals that they engage in throughout their lives, beyond the fundamentals like brushing your teeth and using soap. Older adults are no different. Continuing them is important to them. Let’s go over some hygeine rituals that can be very important for older adults to continue to do.

Going to the Barber or Hairstylist

Some people go to their barber or stylist regularly for their entire adult lives. If they are able to continue going to these appointments with the help of a caregiver, it can really help their sense of dignity. Due to the social nature of these spaces, these kinds of hygiene rituals are also good for people in a social sense. Going to the salon or barbershop increases the amount of people that an older adult sees and interacts with on a regular basis.

Makeup

A lot of older ladies still love to get their nails done, do their makeup, and put on their perfume. Many people even have signature scents or products that they’ve used for decades. Using these products helps them feel like themselves, and that is so vital.

Personal Care for Pets

I am convinced that the popularity of long-haired pets amongst older people is part of these rituals. It’s the same with going to the human salon. Having to take your dog to the groomers regularly gives them social interaction as well as being a necessary task. Doing necessary tasks makes us all feel accomplished.
