We’ve talked a lot about preparing for home care over the holidays. Today, we’re sharing a few holiday must-haves that can help older adults stay comfortable, safe, and supported throughout the winter season. Let us know which ones you’ve put into place this year!
Your Care Plan
A care plan can be as detailed or as simple as you need it to be. Even if you’re not working with professional caregivers, having a written plan can make the holidays run more smoothly. Outline which tasks your loved one may need help with and who is responsible for each one. Keeping notes about medication schedules, routines, or observations in one shared place can help reduce stress and avoid last-minute confusion.
Decorations in an Accessible Place
Make sure holiday decorations are stored in safe, easy-to-reach areas. Avoid climbing ladders or lifting heavy boxes alone. According to the National Institute on Aging, reducing fall risks at home—especially during the winter months—is an important part of supporting older adults’ safety.
All Your Holiday Recipes
Pull out your recipe books early and review your traditional dishes. Consider whether mobility limitations, energy levels, or food allergies might require adjustments this year. Delegating certain recipes or preparing items together can still preserve the nostalgia while making the process more manageable.
Wishing everyone a very happy Thanksgiving week!
