Osteoporosis is a disease that affects bone health. The bodies of people with osteoporosis aren’t able to build new bone tissue quickly enough to replace bone tissue that is lost. It makes bones weak and brittle so that they break easily. Even a minor fall or bump could cause a fracture. Though there isn’t a diet that can cure osteoporosis, what your aging relative eats can make a difference in slowing down bone loss. Not sure what they should eat? Below are some osteoporosis superfoods to include in the older adults diet.

Seeds

Seeds are a good source of magnesium, a nutrient that is necessary for healthy bones. All seeds contain magnesium, but pumpkin seeds are the best option. To add more seeds in the seniors diet, try tossing a handful on top of salads, a cup of yogurt, or a bowl of oatmeal.

Fortified Foods

Look for foods that have been fortified with calcium and/or vitamin D. Foods that are often fortified include juices, milk, breakfast cereals, and breads.

Molasses

One tablespoon of molasses contains 41 milligrams of calcium, so it’s an excellent option for a sweetener. Try using it in a smoothie, putting some in oatmeal, or using it other places where you might otherwise use honey.

Tofu

Tofu is a vegetable-based source of protein made from soy. It can be used in place of chicken in a stir fry, toasted and tossed into salads, or added to soups. Tofu is often fortified with calcium so that half a cup contains 800 milligrams. In addition, studies show that the isoflavones in tofu could protect the bones of postmenopausal women.

Tap Water

Many communities add fluoride to their water because its good for teeth. However, it’s also good for bone density. If your aging relative only drinks bottled water, encourage them to drink water straight from the tap.

Almond Butter

When it comes to bone health, almond butter is a better option than peanut butter. Two tablespoons of almond butter contains 112 milligrams of calcium. In addition, almonds have potassium and protein, which are also good for bones.

Elderly care can help to improve your older family members diet to protect bone health. Elderly care providers can plan balanced meals that include some of the foods listed above. If your aging relative isn’t able to grocery shop on their own, an elderly care provider can drive them to the store and assist them with the shopping. Elderly care providers can also cook meals and prepare snacks for your loved one.
